MMS Family Newsletter September 2022

It's a Great Day to be a Brave!

Principal’s Message

Dear MMS Families,

Summer break is long gone and we are in full swing here at the middle school. This has been a very positive start to a new school year for myself, the staff, families and students of Mascoutah Middle School.  We have set our expectations for behaviors by modeling positive behaviors throughout the building, we have participated in team building activities to build positive relationships and we have set our academic goals at high levels. We are poised and ready for a successful 2022-2023 school year!

Thank you for all you do to support our students and as always, “It’s always a GREAT day to be a BRAVE!”

Travis Klein, Principal

New Administrator Introduction

Hello MMS Families, my name is Mr. Sargent and I am the new assistant principal here at MMS. I began my teaching career at Kankakee Junior High School in 2010; I continued my teaching career at Central Middle School (in the Riverview Gardens school district), Riverview Gardens High School, and Mascoutah High School. During that time, I have served in several different roles in my teaching career including teacher's aide, classroom teacher (both middle and high school), dean of students, athletic director, and coordinator of remote learning. Last year was my 1st year with the Mascoutah School District, where I served as the virtual/remote learning coordinator and interim assistant principal at Wingate Elementary School. I currently live in O'fallon, IL, with my wife and 4-year-old son.

Thank you for the warm welcome Mascoutah Middle School.  I am happy to be here!

Stephen Sargent, Assistant Principal

Homework Lab

Homework lab takes place from 2:45 to 3:30 every Monday, Tuesday and Thursday and is open to any student in need of a quiet, supervised place to complete school work. Students wishing to stay for Homework Lab should report to the homework lab classroom for their team at 2:45. Once in the homework lab classroom, students will not be dismissed until 3:30. Students staying for Homework Lab must be picked up promptly at 3:30. Transportation after our Homework Lab is not provided by the district. Questions about homework lab should be directed to assistant principal, Karen Mulvihill, or your child’s homeroom teacher.

Students need to bring their Chromebooks to school fully charged. There are opportunities to charge at breakfast and lunch but students are asked to charge each night at home so it comes to school fully charged.

Arrival and Dismissal

Parents wanting to avoid the pick up line at dismissal, are asked to have your student leave campus to be picked up. We occasionally see parents picking up in the parking lot of the ASC Building (the Administrative Support Center / District Central Office on Harnett). Please do not do so as it creates an unsafe situation with students crossing our very busy parking lot with buses coming in and out. Students are encouraged to go to Scheve Park if wanting to get picked up off of campus and avoid the pick up line.

Clubs and Activities

Most Clubs still have openings, this linked list will give you an idea of what we all have to offer here at MMS. Click here for the activities listing!

Baseball, Softball, and Cross Country are having great seasons and gearing up for the postseason.

In order to play sports, each student must have a current physical.  Please check with the school nurse to make sure we have one on file.

Counseling & Social-Emotional Support

  • Beginning January 1, 2022, 1-12th grade students will be allowed five (5) mental health days per school year.  Parents will still need to report their student’s absence as a mental health day.  This absence will then be considered an excused absence. Mental Health Day Letter

  • Please visit our Counseling Office Website and MSD19 Health Center for further resources.

  • School social workers and counselors are available to answer questions and provide guidance to students and families who may need additional support as they transition back to school.

Erin’s Law and Sexual Abuse Preventions

As a result of Erin’s Law, Public Act 96-1524, all Illinois public schools are required to implement prevention-oriented child sexual abuse education for students in pre-kindergarten through 12th grade.  MMS school social workers and school counselors have worked to create developmentally-appropriate presentations to teach our students personal body safety and how to ask for help if they find themselves in an uncomfortable situation.  Presentations will take place in September. The concepts that will be discussed include:

  • Personal safety

  • Asking for help

  • Appropriate peer interactions

  • Healthy Relationships

  • Social media/technology safety

For more information and resources, you may visit . Our school social worker and school counselors are also available to answer questions or connect you with resources to support your child.

Cafeteria: Lunch and Breakfast

Breakfast is served from 7:25am to 7:40am each day. Students must arrive prior to 7:35am in order to have time to eat their breakfast. After 7:40am the breakfast serving line is closed, and the cafeteria doors are locked.
