Dear MMS Families,
On behalf of the MMS administrative team, I want to welcome you all back for the 2021-2022 school year. We cannot express how excited we are to get our students back in the building and on the Pathway to Progress! The following information should cover many of your questions or guide you to useful links in order to make this school year productive and successful.

Open House is scheduled for August 16, 2021 from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM. The Open House has no scheduled presentations, but is designed to be a true open house where parents and their students can walk their schedules, meet teachers, discover locker locations, and stroll through the Middle School building. An open house is not like a parent teacher conference. Interactions will be brief and descriptive; class or grade level syllabi will be available.
In order to mitigate large crowds in the building we ask that you follow our recommended schedule below, if at all possible.
6:00 - 6:30 Last Names A-G
6:45 - 7:15 Last Names H-P
7:30 - 8:00 Last Names Q-Z
All exterior doors will be unlocked in order to reduce congestion in the main hallway. Please park and enter through any door and head directly to your child’s classroom. Staff will be located throughout the hallways to help direct you. Teachers' names are posted over each door.
You can see your child’s schedule in Skyward prior to the Open House (posted August 6th). Copies will also be available in the office the night of the open house.
At the conclusion of your time, please be sure to join our PTO outside the cafeteria on the blacktop for a light dinner or snack from the food truck. All proceeds from the food truck purchases will benefit the MMS PTO.
School Supply List
On August 17th, we will have our first day of the 2021-2022 school year and it will be a half-day. Students may enter the school at 7:40 with classes starting at 7:45AM and students will be dismissed at approximately 10:45AM. This first half-day is designed to orient students to the routines here at MMS, store any school supplies, and introduce basic rules and expectations. Chromebooks will be assigned later in the week.
On normal full days, starting August 18th, classes will start at the same time (7:45AM). As students arrive at school in the AM they will gather on the blacktop on the East side of the school (on inclement days students enter early and sit by their lockers). Students may be dropped off starting at 7:25.
The first class of the day is Homeroom where student attendance will be taken, lunch count will be completed, Pledge of Allegiance will be presented, and student social/emotional learning will be addressed with an emphasis on relationship building. Student announcements will be emailed to all students each morning.
All incoming 6th grade returning district students must turn in by the first full day of class (August 18) a completed physical examination on the State of Illinois Certificate of Child Health Examination Form dated within one year of the start of school and an up-to-date immunization record including Tdap booster, 2 doses varicella and one dose of meningococcal vaccine. Failure to provide the appropriate documentation will result in exclusion from school attendance until the requirements are met.
More specific information will be released from the district, in one document, concerning Covid mitigation, quarantining protocols, or any masking regulations. Mascoutah Middle School staff are committed to keeping all students safe and following all district safety/wellness policies.
Arrival and Dismissal
Students should not be on campus prior to 7:25 AM, as there is no supervision available prior to that time. Likewise, students will leave the building by 2:45 PM. All students should also be off campus prior to 4:00PM, unless under the direct supervision of a teacher or coach in an after school activity.

Late Start Schedule (inclement weather) 8:45 AM- 2:40 PM, students on campus at 8:20 AM

Drop Off and Pick-Up Procedures
Bus unloading happens in the south parking lot, at the front of the building starting at 7:25 AM. This lot is for bus loading/unloading only or office visitors (after 7:45am and before 2:15pm).
Car Riders must be dropped off at the blacktop area in the unloading zone only, starting at 7:25 AM. No vehicles will be allowed in the bus loading and unloading area in the south parking lot while busses are present.
Walkers and bike riders should arrive starting at 7:25 AM and report to the blacktop.
Breakfast will begin at 7:25 AM and end at 7:40 AM each morning. Students eating breakfast will be allowed in the building for breakfast service.
Students who ride a bus will be dismissed starting at 2:40 PM and exit their hallway doors. All bus pick-up is in the south parking lot and used only for bus loading. Each bus is numbered and parked in the same space each day.
Car riders will be picked up from the blacktop using the same lane as drop off, starting at 2:40 PM.
Walkers and bike riders will be dismissed starting at 2:40 PM and exit their hallway doors. All bikes or scooters must be walked while on campus. All pedestrians are required to use the crosswalks to exit campus.
Please review the Student Handbook with your child, it can be viewed on the website under “About our School.” The handbook cannot possibly address every specific circumstance but it does describe the school, its current practices, procedures, rules and regulations. Staff and administration consistently enforce the contents of the handbook to maintain a school environment free from distractions that disrupt classroom instruction, and provide a safe, comfortable learning environment for the students.

Erin’s Law and Sexual Abuse Preventions
As a result of Erin’s Law, Public Act 96-1524, all Illinois public schools are required to implement prevention-oriented child sexual abuse education for students in pre-kindergarten through 12th grade. Our district school social workers and school psychologists have worked to create developmentally-appropriate presentations to teach our students personal body safety and how to ask for help if they find themselves in an uncomfortable situation. Presentations will take place at the end of August and be preceded by a letter outlining the lessons. The concepts that will be discussed include:
Personal body safety
Appropriate peer interactions
Social media/technology safety

School social workers and counselors are available to answer questions and provide guidance to students and families who may need additional support as they transition back to school.
August Word of the Month
Each month we introduce a different character trait to students. This month’s character trait is, Goal Setting: Identifying desired outcomes and planning a line of action to achieve them.

Cafeteria: Lunch and Breakfast
We will continue to offer free lunch for all students throughout the 2021-2022 school year, just as we had the previous year. If you qualify for free or reduced lunch, please fill out the Household Eligibility Form linked here. These forms and the numbers they generate have a huge impact on our funding.
Breakfast is served from 7:25am to 7:40am each day. Students must arrive prior to 7:35am in order to have time to eat their breakfast. After 7:40am the breakfast serving line is closed, and the cafeteria doors are locked.
