Dear MMS students and families,
This is a very exciting time in the life of a young person as he or she makes the transition from one stage of life to another. Our 8th grade students are closing one chapter and will open a new chapter in the fall. Usually this happens with a Ceremony of Recognition. One was planned for May 22nd on behalf of our students. However, as you all know the current, unprecedented and historic COVID 19 pandemic crisis has brought unexpected and unwelcome changes into our lives. Vacations, weddings, business ventures, medical procedures, graduations and even celebrations for students in Kindergarten, 5th grade and 8th grade have all been interrupted, postponed or cancelled due to this global pandemic. This choice for MMS, a difficult one, was for reasons informed by medical and government directives, in line with District guidance, to make the best decision that placed safety and health at the core.
Success is to be measured not so much by the position that one has reached in life as by the obstacles which he has overcome. -Booker T. Washington
These words by a personal hero of mine seem timely during this current moment. This end of this year has been a clear obstacle but as we overcome inconvenience and disappointment, just as students have overcome so much through working hard on their academics, coming to school each day while growing as an adolescent young person, the successes they will encounter by overcoming such adversity will be that much greater.
Do not look at what you did not get or what you could not do but instead look at what you have overcome and what the future holds. Look to the horizon and all the places you will go.
Your 8th grade teachers have prepared a video on “Oh, The Places You’ll Go!” It is their gift to you as a recognition of what you have overcome, are overcoming and the challenges and success on your horizon as you go forth into your future.
As for your 8th grade Certificates of Recognition, these will be available tomorrow when you come to Locker Clean-Out. Please stop by the Office. As for other certificates, such as Perfect Attendance, Honor Roll, High Honor Roll or Straight A’s, those will be sent electronically after grades have been finalized. Because of the complications with COVID, reporting and how we are looking at reports from Skyward, like our e-Report Cards, this information will be sent out as soon as it is ready after Memorial Day when student data can be fully finalized.
